My 12-year-old dog has started sleeping all day and seems stiff getting up. Is this just aging or should I be worried?

It can be a bit of both — and it's worth a vet check rather than chalking it up to age.

Stiffness getting up, plus sleeping more, is very often arthritis / joint pain in older dogs. The good news: that's treatable, and many dogs get noticeably more comfortable with the right plan.

But "slowing down" can also overlap with things worth ruling out — thyroid issues, pain elsewhere, heart or weight changes. A senior exam (often with bloodwork) sorts that out.

Book a regular appointment, and mention sooner if you also notice:

  • Trouble with stairs, or reluctance to jump or be touched
  • Weight or appetite changes, or drinking much more
  • Sudden weakness, collapse, or signs of real pain

For now: keep walks gentle and regular, add traction (rugs/runners) on slick floors, and a soft, supportive bed. Don't give human pain meds — many are toxic to dogs.

What changes have you noticed in their mobility, appetite, or energy?

Why PetCare Ally exists

PetCare Ally began with animals I loved deeply.

When Henry, my Great Pyrenees, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and Buster Brown, my miniature pony, experienced a life-threatening emergency, I found myself trying to absorb complicated veterinary information while frightened and under pressure.

I did not need another search engine showing me every worst-case scenario. I needed help understanding what was happening, organizing the questions I needed to ask, and thinking clearly about what to do next.

PetCare Ally was built to offer that kind of support — to help pet parents feel more informed, prepared, and grounded while working alongside their veterinarian.

— Laura Strausberg, Founder

Laura Strausberg, Founder

Laura built PetCare Ally after experiencing how difficult it can be to make clear decisions when an animal you love is sick. Over decades of caring for dogs, cats, horses, and other animals, she has navigated cancer, emergencies, chronic conditions, aging, and end-of-life care. Those experiences showed her how overwhelming it can be to absorb veterinary information, understand the options, know what questions to ask, and decide what to do next.

For more than 20 years, Laura has also worked in healthcare, technology, and other complex environments where people must make important decisions under pressure. She created PetCare Ally to bring those two parts of her life together: deep devotion to animals and a practical ability to help people think clearly when the stakes feel high.

FAQ - Everything you might be wondering

PetCare Ally is a thoughtful, AI-powered companion that helps pet families think through what's going on with their animals - from everyday questions to urgent decisions. It's a calmer, clearer place to sort out what you're seeing, ask follow-up questions, and decide what to do next.

PetCare Ally was founded by Laura Strausberg after experiencing firsthand how hard it can be to make clear decisions when an animal you love is sick. Over decades of caring for dogs, cats, and horses, she has navigated cancer, emergencies, chronic conditions, aging, and end-of-life care. She's not a veterinarian. She's the person on the other side of the exam room table - and she built the tool she wished she had.

PetCare Ally is powered by AI and developed by an experienced AI software developer. The veterinary knowledge behind it has been shaped with input from a team of veterinarians and is grounded in established veterinary guidelines, clinical research, and other trusted veterinary sources.

That combination is what makes PetCare Ally different: real pet-parent experience, thoughtful AI technology, and a veterinary-informed knowledge foundation designed to help pet parents better understand, organize, and navigate their pet's care.

PetCare Ally does not replace your veterinarian. It helps you become a more informed and prepared partner in your pet's care.

No. PetCare Ally is designed to support your relationship with your vet, not replace it. We help you make sense of what's going on with your pet, prepare for vet visits with better questions, and understand the information your vet shares with you. For diagnosis, treatment, and care decisions, your veterinarian is - and should remain - your primary partner.

Google gives you eighteen tabs of mixed information and leaves you to sort through it alone. PetCare Ally is built for the moments when something feels off - it asks the right follow-up questions, draws on quality sources, and helps you think clearly without the overwhelm. Most users tell us they leave a PetCare Ally conversation calmer and clearer than when they started.

General AI tools were built for everything, not specifically for pet care. PetCare Ally is designed for the emotional reality of caring for an animal - it paces the conversation, asks thoughtful questions, draws on pet-health-specific sources, and is built to help you stay grounded and think clearly when stakes feel high. It's a tool with a specific job: helping you care well for the animals you love.

Any time something feels off, or any time you want to think more clearly about an animal's care. Common moments include: when you've just adopted a new pet and have a hundred questions, when you're introducing a new animal to your existing ones, when you're working through a behavioral issue (reactivity, anxiety, litter box problems, multi-pet conflict), when you're noticing a symptom and not sure if it's urgent, when you're preparing for a vet visit, when you've just left a vet visit and want help making sense of what you learned, when you're navigating a chronic condition or an aging animal, when you're caring for a less-common species (rabbits, turtles, parrots, reptiles, small mammals, backyard chickens, goats, mini pigs), or when you're facing a hard decision and want a calmer place to think it through.

Yes - the first weeks with a new pet are one of the most important times to have a thoughtful partner. There's a lot to think through: food, routines, vet care, behavior, what's normal, what's not, and how to settle a new animal into your home. PetCare Ally can help you sort through the hundred small questions that come up, prepare for your first vet visit, and feel more confident as you and your new pet get to know each other. If you adopted from one of our rescue partners, your first 30 days are free.

Yes. Behavioral questions are one of the areas where pet families feel most overwhelmed - the information online is conflicting, the emotional load is high, and the path forward isn't always clear. PetCare Ally can help you think through what's going on with your pet, understand possible causes, sort through training and management approaches, and decide when it's time to bring in a veterinary behaviorist or professional trainer. Whether you're working through reactivity, anxiety, litter box problems, multi-pet conflict, or integrating a new pet into your home, PetCare Ally is a calmer place to think it through.

Yes - every subscription includes unlimited pets in your household. Whether you have one dog, a multi-cat household, horses, or a mixed menagerie, PetCare Ally works for all of them.

Dogs, cats, horses (including mini horses and ponies), rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, parrots, turtles, reptiles, and many other companion animals. PetCare Ally is especially useful for less common species where good information is harder to find. If you care for it, we can help you think through caring for it.

PetCare Ally is built for pet parents, but we know that caring for animals doesn't always fit neatly inside that label. Some of the most thoughtful caregivers we serve are people who keep backyard chickens, raise goats or mini pigs on a small homestead, look after feral cat colonies, or watch over wildlife near their property. If you're making decisions for an animal you care about, PetCare Ally can help you think it through - whether or not “pet parent” is the right word for the relationship.

Your data and your pet's information are private and secure. We don't sell your data and we don't share it with third parties. Conversations stay between you and PetCare Ally.

Yes. You can try PetCare Ally free for 14 days before being charged. We'll ask for a payment method at signup so you can keep going without interruption if you decide to continue. You can cancel anytime during the trial from your profile → Billing to avoid being charged. If you adopted from one of our rescue partners, you get an extended 30-day free trial with no card required.

We offer two plans: $14/month or $99/year at our founding rate. Every plan includes full access for unlimited pets in your household. The annual plan is our best value and saves you $69 compared to paying monthly. If you subscribe at $99/year now, that rate is locked in for as long as your subscription stays active. If you cancel and re-subscribe later, the standard annual price is $129/year.

Your pets' records stay saved. Cancelling ends your access to chat and to new decision briefs, but every profile, medical record, medication, timeline event, and follow-up you've built stays exactly where it is — so if you resubscribe later, your pets' histories are still there. The only thing that removes your records is deleting your account, which you can do yourself from your profile. That is permanent and erases everything for every pet.

You can delete your account yourself, any time, from your profile → Account → Delete Account. We'll ask you to confirm first. Once you do, your subscription is cancelled, any documents you've uploaded are removed, and every pet profile, medical record, medication, timeline event, and conversation is permanently erased from our servers. Deleting is not the same as cancelling - it can't be undone, and we can't bring your pets' histories back afterwards. If you'd rather stop paying but keep everything you've built, cancel your subscription from your profile → Billing instead.

We'd love to hear from you - whether you have a question we haven't answered here, feedback on PetCare Ally. Email us anytime at info@petcareally.ai and a real person will get back to you.
